Next Generation FDA-Approved Toenail Fungus Laser Therapy by Cutera GenesisPlus
What is GenesisPlus Laser?
Genesis Plus is a new laser perfected for safely and effectively treating onychomycosis (toenail or fingernail fungal infection). By targeting the fungus directly, GenesisPlus gets to the source of the problem immediately.
How does GenesisPlus work?
Tiny pulses of light from the GenesisPlus laser pass through the toenail or fingernail to the fungus underneath. The fungus is irradiated without any damage to the surrounding nail or skin.
How long does the procedure take?
Depending on how many toes are affected, the GenesisPlus laser procedure may take 10-25 minutes.
Is GenesisPlus painful?
Most people feel a slight warming sensation during the the procedure. No pain medication is needed and most people find the treatment very easy to tolerate.
How many treatments will I need?
Even though many patients only need one treatment, for the best clinical result, Dr. Ting recommends a series of three laser treatments 6 weeks apart
Are there any restrictions on my activity post procedure?
You can resume your normal activities immediately.
When will I see results?
You won’t notice anything immediately following treatment. However, as your nail grows out, the new nail growth should be clear. Toe nails grow slowly –especially nails infected with fungus. So, it may take 6-12 months for your toenail to clear.
Will the fungus come back?
Reinfection with toenail fungus may be acquired anywhere from your environment, for example, in damp areas such as public swimming pools. Dr. Ting and clinical staff will review with you during consultation important steps to take to prevent toenail fungus from reoccurring.
When can I apply nail polish?
While it is important to remove nail polish, decoration and jewelry prior to treatment, you can reapply nail polish 24 hours after treatment.
How does GenesisPlus Laser Therapy for Nail Fungal Infection compare to other conventional toenail fungus treatments?
Traditional treatments such as nail trimming, topical medicine, oral medicine or nail removal have significant drawbacks. Nail trimming doesn’t treat the fungus. Topical medicines need to be applied for 12 months and have a low success rate. Oral medicines are taken for 3 months but can cause liver or kidney problems. GenesisPlus is a quick, easy, safe, effective procedure that treats the fungus at the source.
How does GenesisPlus compare to Pinpointe Laser?
Pinpointe has a small spot size (1mm) that can lead to two potential problems of stacking and missed areas of treatment. Stacking is due to potential overlapping of the laser beam due to small spot size leading to burns and damage. In addition, Pinpointe laser lacks control of desired temperature necessary for destruction of fungal spores leading to inconsistent treatments with potentially poorly controlled clinically outcomes. GenesisPlus utilizes 5mm spot size that achieves even application of Nd:Yag laser energy to affected fungal infected nails with minimal irritation to surrounding skin and has an advanced real-time temperature sensor to ensure optimal energy delivered to the nail plate.
Will GenesisPlus Laser treatment covered by insurance?
Laser treatment of nail is not covered by insurance plans as it is considered a cosmetic treatment. However, if one reports pain or other symptoms associated with nail fungal infection, Dr. Ting may be able to provide a letter of medical necessity to be submitted to Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) offered by your employer. Dr. Ting offers the one of the most competitive rate for the San Francisco Bay Area for laser treatment of nail fungus infection.
